How Much Caffeine is Okay?

20 Jan

According to the BBC News, experts have recently determined that people who regularly drink a significant amount of coffee may actually become immune to the effects of caffeine in their favourite morning beverage. An experiment was completed on 379 people to study the effects of caffeine and the researchers concluded that the participants actually developed a tolerance towards the stimulant.

The test was performed by scientists from the UK and Germany and required that the trial participants stop consuming any beverage that contained caffeine for 16 hours. Half of the participants were medium to heavy consumers who had at least one to six cups of coffee in a day, the other half of the test group were low or non drinkers. They gave half of the participants a 100mg dose of caffeine and the other half a placebo. The people who were medium or high consumers of caffeine and who had received the placebo experienced a decrease in alertness and in some cases, reported headaches. Those participants who received the dosage of caffeine however had neither of these complaints.

The interesting results of the study also indicated that the participants in the medium to high group showed alertness levels that were not any higher after the caffeine dosage than the participants who were considered low or non consumers who received the placebo.
The Health Canada website is reminding people to be cautious about the amount of caffeine they consume, especially by women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, may become pregnant as well as children.

While small amounts of caffeine are not a concern for most, too much caffeine can cause symptoms of insomnia, headaches, irritability and dehydration. It’s recommended that healthy adults do not exceed 400 mg per day.

Caffeine, in its natural and added forms, can be found in various products, including:

Cola and some other carbonated soft drinks
Coffee and tea
Energy drinks
Cocoa powder and prepared chocolate
Some cold and headache medicines

Health Canada also states “It is also important to know that not all sources of caffeine are obvious. Some natural ingredients, such as guarana and yerba mate, are also naturally occurring sources of caffeine. All sources of caffeine should be included when calculating your daily intake.”

Turquoise – December’s Gemstone Of Blissful Blues

30 Dec

by: Sarah StephensTurquoise is a semi-precious gemstone frequently incorporated into some of the most modern, beautiful handmade jewelry in the world. It is most often found in blue and turquoise hues, and is widely recognized as the December birthstone as well as the 11th anniversary gemstone. But beyond its modern-day uses and associations, turquoise holds a decadent mythological, spiritual and etymological history that adds nostalgic value to its already strong aesthetic worth. Read on for more information that will help you fall in love with your turquoise jewelry – or inspire you to buy some today!Turquoise can range from grey to green to blue and yellows, often veined by the brown matrix with varying textures, and is only found in dry, barren regions. As a far back as 6000 years ago, this stone is one of the oldest to be used by man, for both jewelry and ornamental purposes. Around 5500 BC, the ancient Egyptians found turquoise in the Sinai Peninsula. Around 1900, Queen Zer’s tomb was unearthed and she was found wearing a turquoise and gold bracelet around her wrist.Turquoise is said to bring luck and fortune to the wearer, and a feeling of calmness with its cool color tones, in addition to wisdom, and is often popular in Southwest, Native American, and Egyptian jewelry designs.Turquoise gemstones look best as parts of formal evening jewelry when paired with black onyx, pearls or sterling silver. More casual combinations include softer contrasts with black pearls, carnelian and ruby. 2010 Oscar Jewelry Fashion

30 Dec

The 2010 Academy Awards left many jewelry lovers wanting more this year, as Hollywood’s best and blingiest opted for more understated sparkle than in years past. Gone are Angelina’s outrageous emeralds and the bodacious bib necklaces of 2009 – instead, we were treated with tasteful studs and clusters, layered cuffs, new statement makers – and of course – a few lingering diamond divas to satisfy our craving for carat count.Subtle Sparklers With silvery shimmer ruling many of the gown choices this year, stars like Sandra Bullock in Marchesa and Neil Lane and Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive and Cartier opted for slivers of sparkle on their ears instead of a big diamond look.Cuff QueensLayered cuffs continue to trend big, with fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker causing a stir with her Chanel Couture frock, outrageous bun and Fred Leighton bracelets (featuring a 1950s diamond swirl bracelet, cognac diamond flexible bracelet, rose-cut diamond bracelet in platinum and sapphire and diamond wave bangle bracelet).

The types of pearls: pearl marketplace

30 Dec

Akoya Pearls – these are the type of pearl that are produced by the Japanese Akoya oyster. Akoya pearls vary in size between 2 and 10mm, depending on the size of the oyster in which it is formed. These pearls range in color from white, to cream, green, silver, pink, and gold. Akoya pearls are most recognized for their high luster, and their richness of color.South Sea Cultured Pearls – these fascinating pearls are known to be quite large, most reaching diameters of over 10mm. These sizes are available because they are formed by oysters called Pinctada Maxima, which are quite big, and live in the warmer waters of the South Seas, as well as off the coast of Australia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. South Sea pearls have unique colors which depend on the specific type of oyster in which they’re grown. All south sea pearls come from silver-lipped pearl oysters, except for the golden pearls which come from the golden-lipped pearl oysters. The warm, natural golden color of the gold colored pearls are said to be even rarer than gold itself.Black Pearls – Similar to their white and gold cousins, black South Sea pearls come from the black-lipped pearl oysters of Pinctada Maxima. These pearls which are naturally black in color, come from the Tahitian and Okinawa regions. They are typically between 8 and 15mm in diameter. Their colors range from blues, greens, violets, and combinations of these colors, as well as the most popular and desired peacock green. These pearls are a challenge to farm, and are therefore quite costly. In fact, to collect enough pearls that match in size, shape, and color for one strand necklace, it could easily take a dozen years of harvesting.Freshwater Cultured Pearls – these pearls are almost exclusively cultured in the Chinese lakes and rivers, in Hyriopsis Cumingi mollusks. In each host, ten to fourteen pearls can be cultured at one time. These pearls typically come oval-shaped, or in rice grain shapes.Conch Pearls – These unique pearls are harvested from the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, from the Queen Conch. Examples of the highest quality conch pearls are characterized by their entirely distinctive “flame structure,” which gives the conch pearl the appearance of a small flame burning on its surface.source:purepearls.com/pearl-education/pearl-types.htmlphoto by .jewelsfile.com/lanvin-jewelry/lanvin-glass-pearl-necklace-shows-utter-dramatic-eleganceruffledblog.com/pink-feathers-and-pearls/ronancampbell.com/shop/jewellery/ti-sento/ti-sento-sterling-silver-pearl-necklace-3659pw-42.html
